“Ulwink stepped through the bramble and came to a low rise in the clearing. There stood the ancient tree, or what was left of it. In years past it was called the tree of the skull, but it was not even that anymore, nothing but a withered husk, a broken trunk of what used to be.”

“And then it was over. The giant was of no more trouble to the small village thanks to the dear fellow. The town constable in his gratitude awarded the lad some of the booty taken from the great thing’s home. Some gold coins and several hard boiled goose eggs. (...and no they weren’t gold.)”

“They had just crested the rise of that rocky peak when that great thing, Ustus Swoggle using the trunk of a deadened Osier as a cane, halted as they were met by two rangers lying in wait with brandished swords. His companion, perched on his shoulder cried out, “Nay! Nay, oh Swoggle!Bring your foot down, they hunt us, they hunt!” He held his great foot fast, torn between fleeing or heeding the old woman’s pleas to plow through their pursuers and escape to the valley deep below where none would dare follow them, where theymight find rest. For the men of the townships hunted that which they didn’t understand.”

“…The previous evening, what with all its tomfoolery and maffickiness (and the jippered root ale) left Sylvaticus with a head full of salt the next morning. As he sat there cradling his cuppa, the door chime rang loudly, which caused his noggin to ring as well. He let out a low moan and grumbly thoughts came forth.”
